changes to the Webmail service

why do I see a Welcome page instead of my email Inbox?

When first logging into Webmail, the Welcome' page is displayed. This tells you how many messages you've received. We use the page, too, so we can keep you informed of related information.

For more information about logging in to Webmail (including going straight to your Inbox when logging in) see the article how to check my email using Webmail.

what changes have been made to the email Inbox?

While the look and feel has changed, the functionality of the Inbox remains much the same. Here's a list of changes:

  • the old Inbox tab is now called Email

  • new emails are recognised by bold text and highlighted in soft yellow. They'll also be accompanied by an envelope icon

  • emails that are spam can be reported to us by simply clicking on the Mark as Spam button

  • the blocked list functionality can be directly accessed from the left hand My Settings menu. The adjacent number in brackets tells you how many email addresses they've blocked.

  • the Approved list is a new functionality. It's above the blocked list, and allows you to add email addresses of those people who you always want to receive emails from.

  • under the 'Other Actions' drop down menu, you can 'mark as read' or 'mark as unread'

what changes have been made when writing a message?

  • by clicking on the To and CC links, you can insert email addresses direct from your contact list

  • when inserting contacts this way, the Bcc field can be used for blind copies

  • attachments can be added by clicking on the Attachments link. They can subsequently be deleted by clicking on the Delete link next to the file name.

create/manage folders

You can manage your folders, and create new folders, in much the same way as before, but the 'Empty Trash' option from the Webmail Inbox is now only available from the Manage Folders or Deleted Mail screens. You'll find more information about deleting emails in how to delete an email message in Webmail

known issues

  • you can't log into Webmail by pressing Enter on your keyboard after entering your Username and Password. To log into Webmail please use the Login button. You'll find more details about logging in, in how to check my email using Webmail

  • you can't view attachments in the body of an email. This was never a feature of the Webmail service

  • you may sometimes be unable to log out of Webmail; you'll find more help in the article how to log out of Webmail

  • no Empty trash facility - you'll find more help in the article how to delete an email message in Webmail

  • no facility to turn anti-virus or anti-spam off - while the anti-spam and anti-virus may state 'on', it's not possible to turn these off. Anti-virus helps protect you against viruses that can seriously damage your computer and ensures the email service remains a reputable service.

  • no 'Alt' (hover) text displaying that your email address is in your Webmail Inbox - there are no plans to change this feature.

  • spam filters not working as wanted - if you have set up any email filters in Webmail that aren't working correctly, this may be because you have set up external email addresses through the My Settings, then Check Other email accounts option which are overriding the settings for your Webmail account. To establish if that's the case, try deleting the external email accounts in My Settings, then Check Other email accounts, to see if the problem is then resolved. You can always add them back later. How do I add or delete 'My other mailboxes'?

Mac customers

  • formatting may display slightly differently for Mac users. It may help if you change the text size in your browser - eg Internet Explorer or Safari

  • when trying to register, as a Mac user you will get an error indicating that you're not old enough to register to the service - leave the date of birth field blank as it's not a mandatory field
